There were over 200 registrants for the event, of which 128 were IEEE Life Members, held at the AT&T Auditorium in Middletown, New Jersey. The program included visiting the AT&T Science and Technology Innovation Center and Museum, which showcases historic projects as well as modern-day innovations.
Invited Speakers at the event included Irwin Gerszberg, Executive Director of AT&T Labs; Peter Vetter, President of Nokia Bell Labs Core Research; and Tim Lee, IEEE-USA President-Elect.
Dr. Morimi Iwama was honored at the event. Telstar 1 successfully relayed the first cross-country telephone call and live transatlantic television feed. Morimi Iwama and Jan Norton of Bell Laboratories were in charge of designing and building mechanisms to steer the large horn antenna that redirected the beam for tracking Telstar 1. One of the earliest communications satellites, it was the first satellite to achieve live transmission of broadcast television images between the United States and Europe.
