The Central Texas Section (CTS) Life Member Affinity Group (LMAG) worked with Central Texas Discover Engineering, a non-profit that reaches 14,000 students annually, to provide K-12 students with science and engineering experiences through hands-on experiments and STEM activities.
The Bullock Texas State History Museum provides the venue for the Science Thursday event. On these selected days, volunteers and museum staff provide a range of hands-on STEM activities for visiting students. At the Science Thursday event of 9 March, 10 IEEE CTS members (and spouses) provided help. We staffed four different activities, including:
- Van de Graaff generators in the first-floor lobby
- ‘Electric Pickle’ on the second floor
- Mars lander shock absorbers on the third floor
- Mars helicopter and parachute origami on the third floor.
Life members manage the experiments (where necessary) and provide insight into the science/engineering behind the experiments. Four schools participated in the event.
