The IEEE SYWL Congress is a biannual event organized by IEEE Region 10, encompassing the Asia Pacific Region. The congress aims to promote volunteer leadership among Students, Young Professionals, Women in Engineering, and Life Members.
The most recent event took place at the Yoyogi Olympic Memorial Youth Center in central Tokyo from August 29 to September 1. This global gathering attracted 350 participants, including diverse IEEE Students, Young Professionals, Women in Engineering, and Life Members. The event was hosted by nine Japanese IEEE Sections and included a Young Professionals Career and Leadership Aid Program (CLAP), a Robotics Competition, and an Industry Engagement Workshop.
An ice-breaking reception on August 29 featured an opening address by Prof. Miyanaga, the IEEE Japan Council Chair. The event was graced by the presence of several distinguished guests, including Tom Coughlin, IEEE President; Prof. Kathleen Kramer, IEEE President-elect; Prof. Lance Fung, Region 10 Director; Takako Hashimoto, Region 10 Director-elect; and Kathy Hayashi, Region 6 Director, among others. The program included eight plenary sessions, each accompanied by three breakout sessions, an Awards Reception on the second evening, and a Cultural Night reception on the third evening.
Having fun at SYWL
Rajendra Asthana, MGA LMC Chair, introduced various LMC activities during a plenary session for Life Members. Additionally, nine talks were held across three Life Member sessions, featuring presentations from LMAG representatives from India, Japan, and Malaysia. The Region 10 Life Member Individual Service Award was presented to Dr. VK Damodaran at the Awards Reception. The Region 10 LMAG Achievement Award was awarded to LMAG Kerala, and Certificates of Appreciation were given to 13 LMAGs that hosted more than six events during 2023.
The next R10 SYWL Congress will be held in Victoria, Australia, in 2026.
