IEEE has designated the Universal Serial Bus (USB) as its latest Milestone, celebrating the 1996 specification that transformed electronic device connectivity worldwide. The bronze commemorative plaque was dedicated at Intel’s Hillsboro campus on July 30, 2025.

USB emerged from a collaboration between industry leaders, including Intel, Microsoft, IBM, and Compaq, replacing frustrating “plug and pray” experiences with seamless “plug and play” functionality. This standard has become indispensable to billions of users worldwide.

Nearly three decades later, USB continues its evolution. From the beginnings of connecting printers and mice, USB now powers smartphone charging, high-speed data transfer, and video output through the versatile USB Type-C connector that has become universally recognizable.

The milestone plaque was unveiled at the same Intel campus where pioneering companies conducted USB interoperability testing during the technology’s early days. The dedication ceremony featured inspiring presentations from USB’s original architects and current USB-IF representatives.

This prestigious recognition celebrates how collaborative engineering excellence creates extraordinary societal impact. USB’s familiar cables and connectors stand as symbols of innovation that truly connected the world.
