IEEE Stammtisch at EPFL – LiDAR mapping : Technology and applications

Loading Events

The IEEE Student Branch at EPFL and the Switzerland Life Member Affinity Group invite you to an interesting talk, followed by discussion and apero. Attendance is free, registration is optional.
Dr. Julien Vallet, Director of Sixense Helimap SA, will present LiDAR used for mapping.
Abstract:
Since now more than 25 years, LiDAR technology appeared in the mapping industry.
If in the early years, LiDAR appeared as the replacement for Photogrammetry (usually deployed for all airborne mapping application), it appeared quickly that LiDAR will be complementary technique to other existing techniques.
Nowadays, LIDAR mapping is widely used in all kind of mapping (terrestrial, kinematic, airborne, drones) and the resulting point cloud became a standard approach to model objects in 3D.
The presentation will focus on LiDAR technology that are used in mapping industry (history, principles, evolution, limitation), data processing of point clouds and some related applications such as Powerline mapping, Forestry, Natural hazards…
