Mike will give a brief history of Motorola, with a focus on the Semiconductor Sector in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s.” He will touch on the interaction of Customer Need, Market Opportunity, Competition, Technology Development and Engineering innovation in wafer process technology, Mask making, Design CAD tools and manufacturing tools. Technology progress started from logic gates to integrated circuits, custom design IC to application specific IC, FPGA, general purpose MCU, DSP and basic functional blocks such as A/D, D/A, PLL, RTC leading to system chip. The 3 C Market (Consumer, Computing and Communication) provided high volume demand, drove the learning curve to increase performance and lowering the product costs. The increase of the automotive market using more electronic contents drove high quality and reliable products.
