“Partial Discharge and How to Detect it”

The IEEE Alabama Section eagerly anticipates an illuminating presentation by Dr. Ammar Kahn, Rugged Monitoring, which delves into the nuanced realm of online asset monitoring software and advance monitoring for AIS/GIS equipment, renewables and that includes transformers,
switchgears, HV cables and breakers.
Partial Discharge Monitoring in HV/MV Electrical Assets
Dr. Ammar Khan
Rugged Monitoring, Frank Carrel, Quebec City, Quebec, G1N 4N7, Canada
The oil and gas industry (O&G) have traditionally relied on offline and periodic partial discharge monitoring to measure the insulation strength of High and Medium voltage (HV/MV) assets. This method does not consider the transients and electro-mechanical stresses the asset experience in real time load. The online Partial Discharge (PD) monitoring addresses this by providing continuous real time data. Online PD measurement is not new; however, the challenge is to effectively and reliably detect PD in high noise environment and then utilize this data to calculate the Health and Risk index (HI/RI) of the asset. The online PD data can also be used to localize the fault which can be further validated with offline test data. We will also look at methods to harness the online and offline data in one platform and how to leverage the date with analytics based on IEEE algorithms.
