Meet O.P. Malik – Life Members Committee Member, Awards & Recognition
IEEE Life Fellow O.P. Malik has provided exemplary and sustained voluntary service to the IEEE since first joining in 1966.
In addition to doing pioneering research in the area of adaptive control and artificial intelligence, Om Malik held various administrative positions, including a term as Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Calgary. His service includes the Life Members Committee, including Chair; IEEE Foundation and IEEE Canada Foundation Boards; Fellows Committee three separate terms; Student Activities; Publications and Communications; conferences; and as the Managing Editor of a technical journal.
After graduation, Malik worked in electric power utilities for nine years before going back to the university to obtain Master’s and Ph.D. degrees. He also obtained DIC from Imperial College, London, England. After working with English Electric Co. in England for a short time, he moved to Canada. He taught first at the University of Windsor, Ontario, and then at the University of Calgary, Alberta, where he is now a Professor Emeritus.
He has provided exemplary voluntary service to various technical and professional societies, such as IEEE, APEGGA, IEE (now IET), IFAC, EIC. He has won various awards from IEEE Canada, the Engineering Institute of Canada, APEGGA, and the University of Calgary. He was given the Immigrant of Distinction Lifetime Achievement Award, by Calgary Immigration Services in 2014 and chosen as one of the 2015 “Compelling Calgarians” by the Calgary Herald in 2015. Malik has also received a number of awards for technical achievements and service, including the McNaughton Medal of IEEE Canada.
Malik has been active on the Boards of a number of non-technical associations in Calgary, including Calgary Boy’s Choir, Bill Howard Memorial Foundation, Calgary Indo-Canadian Centre Association, and Chief Judge, 2003 Canada Wide Science Fair. Since 1999 he has been a Member of the Corporation of Seven Wardens.
