
Dr. Sean Bentley is a distinguished physicist, educator, and leader whose career has been defined by a deep commitment to teaching, research, and professional service within the engineering and physics communities. Over more than two decades, he has made meaningful contributions to both academia and professional organizations, particularly through his involvement with IEEE and the physics education community.
Early Education and Academic Foundations
Bentley began his academic journey at the University of Missouri–Rolla (now Missouri University of Science & Technology), where he earned both a B.S. and an M.S. in electrical engineering. During his time there, he demonstrated early leadership and dedication to student organizations, serving as an officer in the IEEE student branch and as president of his Eta Kappa Nu (IEEE-HKN) chapter. His efforts were recognized when he was named Outstanding Member of the IEEE UMR Student Branch for the 1994-1995 academic year. He continued his academic pursuits at the University of Rochester, where he completed his Ph.D. in optics in 2004.
Commitment to Teaching and Research Contributions
Following his doctoral studies, Bentley joined Adelphi University as an Assistant Professor of Physics. His commitment to teaching excellence and student mentorship quickly became evident, leading to his promotion to Associate Professor. Bentley’s passion for education is central to his career; he has mentored the research of nearly 60 undergraduate students in research, including many from underrepresented groups in physics and engineering. Through this mentorship, he has helped cultivate the next generation of scientists and engineers. His exceptional teaching has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the 2013 Adelphi University Tenured Teaching Excellence Award and the 2022 David Halliday and Robert Resnick Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Physics Teaching, one of the highest honors in physics education.
In addition to teaching, Bentley has maintained an active research program, focusing on the fundamentals and applications of quantum entangled photons. His scholarly contributions include numerous publications and presentations, as well as a patent related to optical lithography processes. He continues to advance his field while working on a book focused on quantum imaging, reflecting his ongoing dedication to both research and education.
Leadership in Professional Organizations
Bentley’s professional service extends far beyond the classroom. He has played a significant role in national and international organizations, including the Society of Physics Students and Sigma Pi Sigma, where he served on the National Council and later as Director at the American Institute of Physics. His involvement with IEEE and IEEE-HKN has been particularly notable. Over the years, he has held numerous leadership roles, including Regions 1 and 2 Governor, chair of the Faculty Advisor Committee, and member of the Editorial Board of The Bridge. He has also contributed to various conferences and initiatives, helping strengthen connections within the engineering and technological community. In recognition of his accomplishments, he was elevated to IEEE Senior Member status in 2020 and was elected to the Academy of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Missouri S&T in 2016.
Life Beyond Academia
Outside of his professional life, Bentley enjoys running, reading, and spending time with his family. He has completed a marathon and continues to run half-marathons annually. Originally from Chillicothe, Missouri—known as the “Home of Sliced Bread”—he carries a sense of humor and personal pride in his roots.
