For the July meeting, the Alabama Section has invited Dr. Daniel Goldberg-Zimring from the Department of Radiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). UAB Hospital is the leading hospital in Alabama and the home of some of the top medical programs in the US. It is a 1200 licensed bed hospital that covers a complete range of primary and specialty care services. It is also among the 20 largest and best equipped hospitals in the US.
Dr. Goldberg will explain how MR images are acquired and will use his background in Biomedical Engineering, to highlight the different pieces of hardware and software that are needed for this. This includes the superconductive electromagnets used to generate the main and very powerful magnetic fields used in MRI, the transmission of radio frequency energy to the patients, and the rapid switching of magnetic field gradients to perform the spatial encoding that identifies the exact location inside the patient’s body where the generated signals come from.
