Protective relays make the majority of their decisions from sensing only Voltage and current. Yet, there are many differenct protective relay functions. This presentation provides an overview of the common algorithms a protective relay uses from these sensed current and Voltage signals to make determinations on what is happening in the power system per the system designer's application of these algorithms in relay settings. The presentation includes visual interpretation of the math to provide a solid understanding of what it is calculating. References to where eah functionis commonly used is provided with most elements.
