DESCRIPTION:Alzheimer's disease affects more than 6 million Americans\, and aging remains its greatest risk factor. While current treatments can slow progression\, none stop the disease. Intriguingly\, large studies of patient records suggest that people who take a common class of blood pressure medication — calcium channel blockers — develop less Alzheimer's pathology and maintain better cognitive function than those who don't. But how?\nIn this talk\, Dr. Sarah Hopp will explain how her lab at UT Health San Antonio is working to answer that question. Using a combination of patient data\, genetically engineered mouse models of Alzheimer's disease\, and genetic tools that can switch off specific calcium channels in specific cell types\, her team is uncovering how these widely prescribed drugs may protect the brain. As AI systems scale from thousands to millions of distributed accelerators\, communication is rapidly replacing computation as the primary bottleneck.\nAI systems massive data movement demand networking architectures that provide unprecedented levels of bandwidth\, ultra-low latency\, resilience\, security\, and energy efficiency. The network is becoming an integral part of the AI system. Today's communication infrastructures face serious challenges in scalability\, reliability\, security\, energy consumption\, operational complexity\, maintenance and management as we continue to use retrofitted techniques and protocols designed for communications and technologies that existed several decades ago. These limitations threaten to constrain the future of large-scale AI training\, distributed AI inference\, and emerging autonomous AI ecosystems. SUMMARY:The Hourglass of Industrial Data: from Real-Time Signal Processing to AI
DESCRIPTION:Modern industrial systems increasingly need to bridge two worlds with fundamentally different constraints: deterministic\, real-time control at the shop floor and data-intensive\, AI-driven analytics in the cloud. This talk argues that real-time performance is not a property that scales uniformly through the system; it exists only in a narrow "waist" between two much larger\, inherently non-real-time layers. At the bottom\, sensors\, PLCs\, and SCADA systems are constrained by energy budgets\, making continuous\, deterministic transmission impractical\, especially in IoT and IIoT deployments. At the top\, big data\, AI/ML pipelines\, digital twins\, and LLM-based agents operate on volumes of data that preclude hard real-time guarantees. Only in between – where standards such as OPC UA FX and the emerging IEC/IEEE 60802 Time-Sensitive Networking profile now converge to provide a common data model over deterministic Ethernet – can true real-time behavior be achieved. Drawing on the presenter's work in industrial communication and Service-Oriented Architecture\, as well as recent work on vision-based diagnostic systems (including the MEDUSA project for ultrasound-based synovitis detection)\, the talk traces how data flows from the physical layer\, through this real-time core\, up to signal and image processing\, edge AI\, and cloud-based analytics. SUMMARY:Spectrophotometric measurements of color test targets for high quality digital imaging of cultural heritage
DESCRIPTION:A digital master is considered acceptable only when it accurately reflects the characteristics of the original item and complies with established guidelines and standards. Digitization workflow is analyzed with particular emphasis on target measurements. Color calibration targets play an essential role in high-quality digital photography of cultural heritage objects. These targets contain color patches defined and measured in the CIELAB color space and are indispensable for precise camera color calibration as well as automated quality control of digitization output. The National Digital Archives use various types and sizes of color calibration targets. SUMMARY:From Signals to Decisions: Building Runtime Posture for AI Agents
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nHow Identity\, Enterprise Context\, Observability\, and Bounded Authority Shape Live Risk Decisions\nAn aircraft may begin its journey with a verified pilot\, an approved flight plan\, and permission to take off. But that approval does not guarantee that the original route will remain safe for the entire flight. Weather\, traffic\, fuel\, airport availability\, and other conditions can change. Air traffic control uses live signals to decide whether the aircraft should continue\, slow down\, hold\, change its route\, divert\, or land.\nAI agents face a similar challenge. An agent may authenticate\, receive permissions\, access approved tools\, and begin a task correctly. But as it works\, its behavior\, enterprise context\, risk\, cost\, data sensitivity\, and operating conditions can change. A permission that was appropriate at the start of the session may not be enough to safely approve every action that follows.\nThis talk explains how organizations can build a runtime posture for AI agents. Runtime posture brings together signals such as agent identity\, the user it represents\, session state\, business purpose\, enterprise context\, tool usage\, data sensitivity\, behavior\, approvals\, risk\, and cost.\nObservability provides live information about what the agent is doing. Enterprise context explains the business meaning\, relationships\, ownership\, dependencies\, policies\, and current conditions around an action. Bounded authority defines the limits within which the agent may operate\, including its allowed tools\, data\, purpose\, time\, risk\, and cost.\nUsing a practical enterprise scenario and the air traffic control analogy\, the session will show how these signals can be evaluated at important decision points. Based on the agent’s current posture\, the governing system can allow an action\, apply additional limits\, request human approval\, redirect the agent to a safer option\, or block the action.\nThe key message is simple: initial authorization starts the journey\, but runtime posture determines whether the next action is still safe.\nVirtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/571392
