SUMMARY:Electrical Engineering Design Errors That Caused Construction Problems and Deaths
DESCRIPTION:Engineers have an ethical obligation to assure that their designs are reasonable and safe. While Engineers like to think that their designs are not only technically correct but perfect\, the truth is that errors are often made because the engineers either didn’t understand construction practices\, hadn’t thought through the design\, got sloppy\, or were lazy. James will cover some examples of actual design errors that created unnecessary but costly construction difficulties\, put innocent people at risk\, or caused deadly\, life-altering injuries. Some of these stories are from James’ own experience; others have been related by engineers who were involved.\nBiography\nJames Mercier is licensed as a professional engineer in Texas and five other states\, and a Texas licensed Master Electrician. He is an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Life Member and an IEEE Life Senior Member\, having joined both in college. In the Central Texas Section\, his past duties included Membership Development Chair\, Sr. Member Upgrade Coordinator\, and Treasurer. He also is a Past-Chair of the IEEE joint chapter (PI)² (PES/PELS/IES/IAS/PSES). His nickname is “Honeybadger”. James was a 2020 George F. McClure Citation of Honor recipient for his dedication to IEEE and his Chapter.\nJames has an eclectic history. After serving 4-years in the Air Force\, he worked and completed a four-year Apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in 1979\, making him a qualified construction electrician. The training specialized in industrial and commercial wiring. Then\, in 1986\, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a BS in Civil Engineering and worked as an Environmental Engineer in the private sector. In 1994\, James was hired into the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to work in the Roadway Illumination and Traffic Signals Sections where he specialized in reviewing electrical plans\, specifying grounding practices\, inspecting installations for code compliance\, improving design practices\, and lightning protection.\nIn 2001\, James transferred to the TxDOT Bridge Division Hydraulics where he specialized in river and stream flows through culverts and bridges. James used his multiple and varied experiences to design a collapse detection and motorist warning system for the Queen Isabella Causeway Bridge in south Texas. James also was a Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) and an instructor for the Texas Floodplain Management Association.\nHe retired from TxDOT in 2015 so that he can enjoy doing what he wants to do!\nSpeaker(s): James\,\nAgenda:\nLunch is provided!\nBldg: American Electric Power\, 212 E. 6th Street\, Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, United States\, 74120

SUMMARY:{AI Talks with Tea&Coffee #48} Distinguished Microwave Lecturers Series: High-Frequency Doherty Power Amplifiers: Challenges and Design Methodologies
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nDoherty power amplifiers are widely used to achieve high efficiency with high-PAPR signals\, but their extension to millimetre-wave frequencies is far from trivial. At high frequency\, classical Doherty assumptions no longer hold\, and efficiency\, gain\, bandwidth\, linearity\, and implementation constraints become strongly interdependent.\nThis lecture provides a design-oriented perspective on the key challenges limiting high-frequency Doherty operation and discusses practical methodologies to address them. Topics include gain behaviour\, on-chip power combination\, bandwidth limitations\, and linearity degradation\, with emphasis on architectural trade-offs rather than idealized solutions. The discussion is supported by measured GaN MMIC examples for 5G and satellite applications\, showing that successful high-frequency Doherty designs rely on balanced co-design choices rather than isolated performance optimization.\nShort Bio:\nVittorio Camarchia is an Associate Professor at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications\, Politecnico di Torino\, Italy. His research focuses on high-efficiency and high-linearity RF/microwave power amplifiers for 5G/6G and satellite communications\, with emphasis on load-modulated architectures\, including Doherty\, Chireix and LMBA amplifiers\, GaN/GaAs MMIC design\, and broadband linearization. He is Track Editor for MWTL\, Chair of IEEE MTT-S TC-23 Wireless Communications for 2025–2026 and an IEEE MTT-S Distinguished Microwave Lecturer for 2026–2028.\nSpeaker(s): Prof. Dr. Vittorio Camarchia\,\nAgenda:\nPizza\nIntroduction of the Speaker\nTalk\nQ&A\nRoom: Grand/Large Conference Room\, Bldg: Nashua Public Library\, 2 Court Street\, NASHUA\, New Hampshire\, United States\, 03060\, Virtual: https://events.vtools.ieee.org/m/565854

SUMMARY:Data Storage in Outer Space: Overcoming the Obstacles -By Thomas Coughlin\, IEEE Past President
DESCRIPTION:Please Join the\nSpeech by Dr. Thomas Coughlin\, Past President\, IEEE.\nData Storage in Outer Space: Overcoming the Obstacles\nJuly 14th\, 6pm – 7 PM\nAfter a 50-year hiatus\, multiple countries are racing to be the first to return to the Moon. Lower launch costs are enabling more satellites to be put into low earth orbit\, and data centers in space and on the moon are being planned. In addition\, preparations are afoot for harvesting and mining the moon and asteroids\, as well as for colonizing Mars.\nIt appears that we are on the brink of a new industrial revolution with development beyond our planet\, and reliable data storage and processing will be key requirements to make all of this the new reality. However\, these harsh environments present obstacles that must be overcome for the ambitious plans to become reality.\nIn this talk\, Dr. Tom Coughlin will discuss many of the requirements for this new revolution\, and some of the technologies that look to make this possible.\nSpeaker . SUMMARY:AI That Works for You & Building a Private LLM
DESCRIPTION:AI That Works for You: Tools\, Prompts\, Privacy — and How A Warship Taught Itself History\nGenerative AI is everywhere — but using it effectively\, safely\, and without surrendering your data is a skill most people are still developing. This quarter's OEB LMAG lunch brings together and local Higher Ed leader and a CIO\, two seasoned practitioners for a practical\, hands-on session on getting real value from AI tools. Roger Doering\, Professor of Engineering at Cal State East Bay\, leads the main program on leveraging generative AI effectively and safely — covering tools\, approaches\, prompting strategies\, and critical privacy and security considerations. He's joined by Mark Rowell\, CIO of the USS Hornet Museum\, who adds a fascinating real-world dimension: what happens when you build your own private LLM on a historic warship's institutional knowledge. Live demos included. Bring your questions — and your appetite.\nGenerative AI tools have moved from novelty to necessity — but the gap between casual use and genuinely effective use is wide. For users with concerns about accuracy\, privacy\, security\, and institutional knowledge\, the public-cloud nature of most AI tools raises real questions.\nThis session addresses both sides of that challenge. Roger Doering brings academic and professional rigor to the question of how to get the most from generative AI — what works\, what doesn't\, and how to stay safe while doing it. Mark Rowell then demonstrates what the far end of the privacy spectrum looks like in practice: a fully private LLM\, built on Google's NotebookLM\, trained on 165 sources of institutional knowledge about one of America's most historic naval vessels.\nTogether\, they cover the landscape from everyday AI productivity to purpose-built institutional intelligence — with plenty of time for hands-on exploration\, demos\, and the kind of frank conversation that only happens over a good lunch.\nWHAT YOU'LL COVER\n• Generative AI tools landscape — what's worth your time in 2026 and why\n• Prompting that actually works — practical approaches and live examples\n• AI privacy and security — what you're sharing\, with whom\, and how to protect yourself\n• Hands-on demos — try it yourself\, not just watch it\, so bring a laptop\n• The private LLM case study — how the USS Hornet built a closed\, curated AI from 165 institutional sources\n• Real-world use cases from the Hornet's deployment — docents\, educators\, researchers\, and visitors\n• Open discussion — bring your own AI questions\, frustrations\, and experiments\nSpeaker(s): Roger\, Mark\,\nAgenda:\nOrder & Serve Lunch: 11-12\nMeeting Topic and discussion: 12-2\nBldg: Golf course restaurant\, not pro shop\, Beeb's Sports Bar and Grill\, 915 Club House Drive\, Livermore\, California\, United States\, 94550

SUMMARY:An overview of the space shuttle development\, design and operations.
DESCRIPTION:The Space Shuttle program\, initiated by NASA in 1972 and concluded in 2011\, marked a revolutionary era in space exploration. This reusable spacecraft system comprised five orbiters: Columbia\, Challenger\, Discovery\, Atlantis\, and Endeavour. They collectively completed 135 missions. Highlights include the deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope\, pivotal work on the International Space Station\, and numerous scientific experiments yielding invaluable insights. The program experienced both triumphs and tragedies\, notably the Challenger and Columbia disasters\, which underscored the inherent risks of space travel. Ultimately\, the shuttle program left a legacy of innovation and international cooperation in human spaceflight. The presentation will provide an overview of the space shuttle development\, its design and operations\, and provide insight into the Challenger and Columbia Disasters.\nIEEE members need to pay $20.00\, to offset the cost of the lunch\, which covers about 80% of the actual cost. Guests are $25.00 and Students are $5.00. Please bring cash or a check as we cannot process credit cards at this time. La Fonda’s lunch items are offered via a menu of three choices plus tea or water. We appreciate your consideration and we look forward to seeing you there.\nCo-sponsored by: EMB\nSpeaker(s): Ben\, \,\nBldg: La Fonda\, 8633 Crownhill Blvd\, Private Room\, San Antonio \, Texas\, United States\, 78209
