Region 8 members convened in Brugg-Windisch, Switzerland on October 11-12, 2024, for a joint LMAG meeting. Dubbed “Alpine Day,” the meeting was organized and hosted by the Switzerland Section LMAG and brought together representatives of the LMAGs of the Sections Austria, Benelux, Germany, Italy and North Macedonia.

The event program showcased the professional and geographical diversity of the participants. Austrian, Italian, and Swiss participants gave four distinguished lectures about cooperation in two IEEE Milestones, partnership between the Swiss industry and the Switzerland Section, the situation of grid and renewable energies in Austria as well as the long-term future of renewables networking of the Southern Alpine Region. The invited lecture session was followed by five technical presentations of the Switzerland Section´s industrial experts about technological trends and solutions mainly in conjunction with energy politics and development.

Following the lectures, six participating LMAGs and the R8 LM as well as the HA Committees gave activity overview presentations, while the ExCom of the Switzerland Section held its 2024 Q3 Meeting. The first day event ended with a joint social session in the typical Swiss apéro fashion, providing guests an opportunity to mingle and enjoy beverages and light snacks. The organizers and the invited lecturers were recognized and in addition, Regional Individual LM Service and Regional LMAG Achievement Awards were presented to the recipients.

The second day activity was a coach excursion along the Rhine River visiting two important IEEE Milestones of electrical power engineering in Europe. The first one is located in Rheinfelden, where in 1898 the 50 Hz frequency standard for 3-phase AC power transmission was established. The second milestone in Laufenburg, marks the birth of the European power grid interconnection network in 1958.

Both milestones https://ethw.org/Milestones:Rheinfelden_Hydroelectric_Power_Plant_1898_-_2010) and the https://ethw.org/Milestones:Star_of_Laufenburg_Interconnection,_1958  highlight the strong economic and political cooperation of the countries of the Alpine Region as well as the partnership of the related IEEE Sections under the leadership of the Switzerland Section.
