In May, the IEEE Life Members Committee launched an effort to formalize the Special Interest Group (SIG) program for IEEE Life members. While interest groups have existed within some local Life Member Affinity Groups (LMAGs) for several years, we are now expanding the program to create broader opportunities for engagement, collaboration, and knowledge sharing across the global IEEE Life members community.
The recent survey sent out to the community showed that IEEE Life members want to remain intellectually engaged, technically curious, and values-driven, but are often constrained by life stage, health, or time. The survey responses provided valuable insights that will help shape future programs and activities.
Curious Minds Webinar Series
One immediate outcome of the survey is the launch of the bimonthly Curious Minds webinar series. These webinars will provide opportunities to explore emerging technologies, innovative applications, and real-world experiences presented by leading experts and practitioners.
The inaugural September webinar features David Bondurant and his expertise in nuclear non-proliferation. The November event will feature Anil Roy, an AI expert for Zillow, and will focus on several specific applications of AI.
Special Interest Organizational Meetings
We are hosting organizational meetings on Tuesday, Sept 8th and Thursday, Sept. 10th to form leadership teams, develop action plans, and launch selected Special Interest Groups.
These SIGs will connect IEEE Life members who share common interests, technical expertise, and volunteer aspirations. They will also provide opportunities to share knowledge and experience across the broader IEEE community and with the communities we serve.
The Launch Teams will work collaboratively to:
- Review and prioritize Special Interest Group topics identified through the survey.
- Develop a roadmap for launching and sustaining multiple SIGs.
- Plan webinars, panel discussions, and other virtual events relevant to Life members.
- Identify opportunities for collaboration with IEEE organizational units, societies, councils, regions, sections, and affinity groups.
- Support the formation and growth of Special Interest Groups at the global, regional, and section levels.
- Encourage participation, mentoring, knowledge sharing, and community building among IEEE Life members worldwide.
- Serve as subject matter experts, moderate discussions, identify speakers, and provide strategic guidance.
